About NTU History Gallery

About the History Gallery

National Taiwan University, founded in 1928 as Taihoku Imperial University, was Taiwan's only university during the Japanese colonial period. After World War II, it was reorganized as National Taiwan University in November 1945. In May 2004, President Chen Wei-chao initiated a museum-scale history exhibition to showcase NTU's role in Taiwan's social development.

The permanent exhibition occupies the central reading hall of the Old Main Library, built in 1929. When the library relocated in 1998, this designated historic site became home to the Drama Department's theater and, later, the History Gallery. After a year of preparation, President Chen presided over the opening on June 22, 2005. The gallery officially welcomed visitors with guided tours on November 7.

In 2007, alumnus Mr. Lee Hwa-lin's Chuan Lyu Foundation funded the special exhibition hall. Named "Chuan Lyu Exhibition Hall" to honor his dedication, it opened on University Anniversary Day (November 15) with the "NTU Museums Special Exhibition."

The permanent exhibition spans 750 square meters, with the Chuan Lyu Hall covering 300 square meters. Beyond exhibitions and tours, the History Gallery collects artifacts and preserves NTU's tangible and intangible heritage.

Old Photos of the Campus

These precious historical photos of NTU represent the deep connection alumni feel for their alma mater and document the transformation of our various campuses throughout Taiwan.

To ensure these memories are never forgotten, the History Gallery provides a dedicated home for their preservation. We welcome donations of campus photographs that are historically significant, aesthetically striking, or engaging to be part of our archival collection.

Historical Artifacts

Many historical artifacts witnessing NTU's history have been inadvertently discarded or scattered as people left the university.

The History Gallery's mission is to preserve significant NTU-related historical objects, including calligraphy by Taihoku Imperial University's founding president Shidehara Tan, old instruments, early identification badges, and one of Taiwan's first self-made cellos.

Please entrust or donate NTU historical artifacts to the History Gallery for reproduction or collection, ensuring NTU's memories are passed down through generations.

Changes in the Main Campus Landscape

NTU's main campus in Gongguan, Taipei, spans over two centuries. From early Qing Dynasty settlement to the establishment of the Taiwan Governor-General's Agricultural and Forestry College (1919), the institution evolved through several transformations before merging into Taihoku Imperial University (1928) and becoming National Taiwan University in November 1945.

This rich history has left remarkable traces across campus. Join us on a journey through NTU's architectural evolution from the 1770s to the 1950s—scroll down to explore the timeline.

Exhibition Review

Since 2010, the NTU History Gallery has curated special exhibitions to share the university's century-long heritage with alumni, students, and visitors.

Beginning with "We Contribute This University to the Spirit of the Universe: Special Exhibition Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of President Fu Ssu-nien's Death" (2010), our past exhibitions—though physically concluded—remain accessible through our digital archives for your continued enjoyment.

We invite you to explore NTU's legacy and discover the hidden achievements within our campus. We highly value your suggestions for future exhibitions and warmly welcome you to contact us with your proposals.

*All archived exhibition websites are available in Mandarin only.

Oral History

As NTU approaches its centennial, many pivotal moments and daily experiences beyond official documents have faded as people graduated, departed, or passed away.

Through oral history interviews, the History Gallery recovers these lost memories and traces forgotten footsteps.

By preserving these vanishing memories, we ensure future generations remain connected to NTU's roots.
