校史館NTU History Gallery

During the Japanese colonial period, National Taiwan University (NTU) was chartered as Taihoku Imperial University (TIU) in 1928, and was the only university in Taiwan at the time. After WWII ended in 1945, the TIU was renamed to NTU. However, it wasn’t until 1998 that NTU started displaying its chronological history in a simple style in a corner of the new Main Library. The NTU History Gallery Gallery was inaugurated in 2005. The Gallery resides in the NTU old Main Library. Built in 1929, it was identified as a historical site by the Taipei City Government in 1998. The Gallery’s permanent exhibition area is located in the central reading room on the 2nd floor. The vaulted ceiling and row of arch windows are designed to offer an elegant and unique view. The themes on display include NTU’s spirit and symbols, chronology, accreditations and achievements of different colleges, social participation, campus life, change of campus appearance, landscape history, reflections, and intergenerational memories.

Since its establishment, the Gallery has been dedicated to a rich array of fields, such as the research of history and humanities since established and the collection of historical artifacts, documents, old photos, and oral history interviews. It also curates exhibits and events about NTU history, publishes books, and markets NTU souvenirs. By combining the experiences of alumni and current students, the Gallery aims to bring together its illustrious heritage, preserve collective memories, and pass on the NTU spirit and legacy.

Photo of the Taihoku Imperial University Main Library Building (The National Taiwan University Old Main Library)

Taihoku Imperial University followed the example of Germany to adopt a lecture system, with a library affiliated to each lecture. Therefore, the libraries had a decentralized operation and management model. The library buildings were completed in batches in 1929 and 1931 with a joint catalog kept in the libraries. Therefore, it was possible to locate any book in any of the libraries. It was not until 1998 that the Old Main Library was relocated to the building of the New Main Library at the end of the Royal Palm Boulevard that the 34 department libraries became centralized, putting an end to the decentralized management model.

The Academy of Agriculture and Forestry was set up in 1919 in line with the Southern Expansion Doctrine during Japanese colonial period .In line with the new Taiwan Educational Decree, the college was upgraded as the Advanced Academy of Agriculture and Forestry with the campus moved to Tomita-cho (now the NTU main campus). The college was renamed as the Agriculture and Forest College, Government-General of Taiwan in 1927.The Agriculture and Forest College was abolished in 1928 to make way for “. the School of Agriculture and Forestry of Taihoku Imperial University”.The department became an independent school again from Taihoku Imperial University in 1943, and was moved to Taichung in October as the “Taichung College of Agriculture and Forestry”. It is the predecessor of today’s National Chung Hsing University.
